Loss Minimization Control of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor for Electric Vehicles

Abstract This paper aims to improve efficiency in interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) drives for electric vehicles. The controllable electrical loss which consists of the copper loss and the iron loss can be minimized by the optimal control of the armature current vector. The control algorithm of current vector minimizing the electrical loss is proposed and the optimal current vector can be decided according to the operating speed and the load conditions. The completed drive is successfully implemented in real-time using DSP board DS1103. It is found from both simulation and experimental results that the efficiency of the proposed IPMSM drive for electric vehicles is improved significantly as compared to the conventional id=0 control technique.
